Our Story

San Gabriel Christian Church has been faithfully serving the community of San Gabriel and the surrounding areas for more than 165 years. Established in 1859, we are recognized as the oldest church in Milam County and remain committed to sharing the unchanging truth of God's Word with each new generation.

Our church began as a small group of believers who gathered in homes throughout the San Gabriel area during the early 1850s. Through the dedication of faithful men and women, the congregation continued to grow, eventually organizing officially as San Gabriel Christian Church in 1859.

Despite facing challenges throughout its history, including fires, floods, and the changing landscape of rural Texas, the church has remained a steadfast witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The current sanctuary, built in 1924 on higher ground, stands as a testament to God's faithfulness and the perseverance of those who came before us.

The history of San Gabriel Christian Church is deeply connected to the history of the San Gabriel community itself. Generations of believers have worshiped, served, and shared the love of Christ from this place, passing down a legacy of faith that continues today.

Early church records tell of traveling ministers who faithfully served the congregation during its formative years. Even when a full time pastor was not available, strong local leaders continued the work of ministry, ensuring that the church remained active and growing. Through their commitment, many came to faith in Christ and were baptized into the fellowship of believers.

Their example reminds us that God's Church is built not on buildings, but on faithful people committed to following Him.

The mission of San Gabriel Christian Church is evangelizing and developing fully devoted disciples. We seek to fulfill this mission by faithfully teaching Scripture, worshiping God together, encouraging meaningful relationships, and sharing the hope of Jesus Christ with our community and beyond.

As a Bible believing, non denominational Christian church, we are committed to standing firmly on God's Word while reaching people with the timeless message of the Gospel.
